Our School | Philosophy

At the Gan, we use a play-based developmental approach. We recognize that all children learn in different ways, at different paces. Along with the fundamental skills taught in our curriculum, we believe enrichment activities and parent involvement are critical ways to extend learning opportunities. Our children are part of a vibrant community of learners.

Through a variety of hands-on experiences, we encourage students to explore the world around them. Students develop their cognitive, social, and physical skills through art, make-believe play, science, cooking, literature, music, and simply playing together. Our program, which offers small classes and an excellent student-to-teacher ratio, is enhanced by enrichment faculty in creative movement, music, science, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math), and Jewish education.

Joyous celebrations of Jewish holidays foster a deep feeling of pride in Jewish heritage as children participate in traditional rituals, and create their own new customs. Jewish values and mitzvot, such as chesed (kindness to others), bal tashchit (caring for the environment), hachnasat orchim (hospitality), and tzedakah (justice, giving to others less fortunate) are also woven into our curriculum.

Throughout the school day, students develop what Ellen Galinsky, in Mind in the Making, calls the “seven essential life skills”: focus and self control, perspective taking, communicating, making connections, critical thinking, taking on challenges, and self-directed, engaged learning. All our children, including those with special needs, explore new ways to apply these life skills in the classroom, on the playground, on field trips, and during our special parent-sponsored programs.
